This morning I woke up feeling a little sad because I was supposed to celebrate my 10th wedding anniversay with friends and family. Due to circumstances beyond my control, that won't be happening today.
Then I received a few IM's for friends about signing a petition about something called "Orphan Works", a bill that Congress is trying to pass. I looked at the petition information and was hesitant to sign until I read an e-mail sent to me from Tara and Myra.
Long story short, basically what Congress wants to do is to declare that any artwork, video, photos, sculptures, sketches or any other individual creative work that is not registered by a privately owned registration company is up for grabs to anyone who wants to claim it.
For example, I recently made a music video (shamless insert here, lol!) with many works of art in it and credited most of the artists in an area in the end. Let's say that I made that video after this bill had been passed and said in the credits "All artwork owned by me."
Most, if not all the artists, would jump in saying "Hey now Az, some of thoses pics you used were made by me. I think you should mention that."
I could then say, "Nope, sorry, I registered all the artwork with a registration company so it all belongs to me."
Now that would piss you off, wouldn't it? Especially if I made money off that video. Well guess what, under the Orphaned Works bill, it would be legal, even if you had registered your works with another company.
Now you all know I would never do that as I respect all artwork and find it demeaning to steal others hard work, but the concept is very clear that it could happen that way. So what can you do? Well as the e-mail Tara and Myra said, write you your senators, congressinal representatives, govenors, even the President himself if you wish and strongly write against this bill!
You can also go to Deviants against the "Orpaned Works" Bill and sign the petition showing your support against this bill.
Folks, none of us want our creative works to be stolen from us legally and if we don't stop this bill, then we will have no choice in the matter. Do your part to stop this bill!!!
